Snooze
June 2025 - If you’re driving at night in the hill country, you’ve maybe seen a flash of gray run across the street and into darkness. On a warm night in June, I shared those woods with the flash of gray that I’d seen so many times but could never truly observe. This gray fox was nestled high up on a curving tree branch that made for a nice bed with it’s nose tucked into it’s thick fur. After about a thirty minutes, it lifted it’s gaze and settled on it’s domain.
There’s a quiet curiosity in it’s stare but seemed to know everything about world at the same time. I was observing it with my eyes but I don’t know if I could truly see. See the pure nature around me or the real costs of daily survival.
We drive down streets, walk trails, see through forests. But if we’re lucky, we’re held in moments like this, held by the gaze, or sound. This is the resonance that grounds us to the wild and what we live amongst.
